Free Comic Book Day is an annual, industry-wide promotional event that began in 2002. Traditionally held on the first Saturday in May (this year: May 2, 2026), it encourages fans (especially new readers) to visit local comic shops and pick up specially printed comic books for free.

For years, Free Comic Book Day was owned and organized by Diamond Comic Distributors. However, Diamond filed for bankruptcy in 2025, and its assets (including the Free Comic Book Day trademark) were sold.

That trademark is now owned by Universal Distribution, which is organizing its own version of Free Comic Book Day for 2026.

📘 Why There Are Two Free Comic Events

Because of disagreements over branding and distribution rights, two separate free comic giveaway events will take place on the same day — May 2, 2026.

Now officially run by Universal Distribution, this version includes participation from publishers such as:
